71st British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival 8th & 9th October 2022
On the Chatsworth Estate, near Glapwell, North East Derbyshire, By kind permission of the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire
Around 230 top ploughmen and women from all over Great Britain will compete this autumn in the 71st British National Ploughing Championships which will be held on the Chatsworth Estate on land near Glapwell, North East Derbyshire by kind permission of the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire. In the events' 71 year history, this will be the first time ever that it has been held in the county of Derbyshire.
Two busy days - Saturday and Sunday, October 8th and 9th - will be packed with competitions for many types of plough and styles of ploughing, the highpoint of which will be when the British Champions are crowned and the top competitors are selected to represent England at the 2023 World and European Ploughing Championships.
There will be a total of fifteen different ploughing classes over the two days (detailed below) plus in six of these classes, the top 10 competitors from the first day will take part in a ‘Plough-Off Final’ on the Sunday to find the British Champion in each section.
There will be something for everyone alongside the ploughing competitions, from steam ploughing engines; vintage tractors and machinery displays; manufacturers and local dealers demonstrating their latest farm equipment; agricultural trade stands; shopping stalls and country crafts.
Already the event has attracted considerable interest and we are looking forward to a first class event. Visitors will see not only the highly skilled competition ploughing and an extensive trade stand area but also attractions such as vintage tractors, ploughs and equipment; giant steam ploughing engines; craft marquee with a wide variety of stalls; and demonstrations of the latest tractors, farm machinery and equipment under working conditions.
Horse ploughing is always one of the major attractions and there will be around a dozen pairs of heavy horses at work each day. Magnificently turned out with ornate brass and leather harness, these true farm ‘workhorses’ will be seen competing to produce the best general purpose ploughing on the first day and the stylish traditional ‘high cut’ work on the second day.
Main sponsors of the Championships are Bridgestone/Firestone and Aztec Oils and further support has been given by Tama Farm Grown Solutions, Lantra Awards, Cheffins, Dalton Tags, A R Demolition, Barker Partnership, CBS, Cereals Event, Ripon Farm Services and Dales Agri Sales Agency.
It is an excellent site and it is very easy to access, being close to junction 29 on the M1 motorway and there will be plenty of free car parking space.
